The Jetten cabinet aims to achieve long-term savings of €6.5 billion by cutting social security benefits. Proposed measures include shortening unemployment benefits (WW) from two years to one and reducing the daily wage used to calculate disability benefits (WIA). While the government has since scrapped plans to raise the AOW retirement age more quickly, Minister Vijlbrief remains open to alternative cost-saving measures. Trade unions have deemed the cuts unacceptable and are refusing to negotiate until the plans are removed from the budget. Consequently, a series of strikes is planned, including actions at Schiphol Airport and a nationwide public transport shutdown. Despite the tension with the government, unions and employers continue to hold separate discussions regarding potential adjustments to the social security system. These social partners are keeping the details of their meetings confidential to avoid unnecessary pressure.
