The Democratic Republic of the Congo has officially requested that Belgium return human remains acquired during the colonial period. For eight years, both nations have worked to identify and repatriate art and heritage objects looted from the former Congo Free State and Belgian Congo. While efforts have focused on returning collections from the Central Africa Museum in Tervuren to Kinshasa, other problematic holdings have emerged. These include ethnographic collections containing African skulls currently held in Belgian museums. The request marks a significant step in addressing the darker aspects of colonial acquisitions. Both governments continue to collaborate on the systematic census of these items. The process aims to restore dignity to the victims of colonial exploitation.
