The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has cautioned that a proposed Czech government bill regarding the funding of public media lacks crucial safeguards against political interference. The EBU, alongside 17 Central and Eastern European public broadcasters and eight journalistic organizations, released a joint statement expressing concern over the bill’s potential impact on the independence of Czech Television (ČT) and Czech Radio (ČRo). The proposed legislation, which details state budget funding for these outlets, does not include legal guarantees to protect them from politically motivated financial decisions. Critics fear this lack of protection could compromise the editorial independence of the broadcasters. The EBU is urging the Czech government to reconsider and abandon the planned changes. The organizations emphasize the importance of a stable and independent funding model for public service media.
