A Czech man, Petr Zemánek, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the attempted murder of a Belarusian man in Prague last year. The Higher Court in Prague increased the original sentence after reclassifying the crime from attempted simple murder to attempted premeditated murder, citing the victim’s nationality as a motivating factor. Zemánek, a repeat offender, reportedly shouted anti-Ukrainian slurs, including calls for the death of all Ukrainians, during the assault. The attack involved Zemánek stabbing the victim. The court’s decision, made on Tuesday, is final and legally binding. Prosecutors had appealed for a harsher penalty, leading to the reclassification and increased sentence. The incident highlights concerns about racially motivated violence in the Czech Republic.
