Costa Rica is experiencing a surge in widespread power outages, described as an “epidemic” by local sources. The state-owned electricity provider, ICE, is facing criticism for a slow and disorganized response to the increasing number of failures. A key issue identified is an inefficient system for receiving outage reports from the public. Furthermore, the assessment and repair of damage contributing to the outages have been inconsistent and delayed. This lack of effective response is exacerbating the problem and leaving communities without power for extended periods. The situation highlights systemic weaknesses within ICE’s infrastructure and operational procedures.
