Costa Rica’s National Liberation Party (PNL) is preparing to launch its official think tank, Fidelis, intended to strengthen the party and advise its lawmakers. Giovanni Calderón, the current director of the Diario Oficial (Official Journal), was initially considered for a leadership role in parliamentary advising, according to Patricio Gajardo, the designated executive director of Fidelis. Gajardo publicly stated Calderón’s appointment was settled, despite his existing public office. However, Gajardo later told Fast Check that Calderón would have no role in Fidelis. Calderón himself claimed to Fast Check that he has no affiliation with either the foundation or the PNL, while leaving the door open to future involvement. The situation has raised questions regarding potential conflicts of interest and the appointment process within the PNL.
