An Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has claimed over 3,000 lives since it was declared a public health emergency in May. Confirmed cases have reached 6,186, with a mortality rate averaging 48 percent. The World Health Organization (WHO) warns the current outbreak is tracking to become the deadliest on record, potentially exceeding the West Africa epidemic of 2014-2016 which resulted in 11,000 fatalities. This outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus. Critically, there is currently no approved vaccine or treatment available for this specific strain of Ebola. The situation remains dire, highlighting the ongoing challenges in containing and combating Ebola in the region. International aid and resources are urgently needed to address the growing crisis.
