A concerning pattern of political favoritism has emerged in the Colombian regions of Guainía and Vichada, involving appointments to public universities (UTL). Investigations reveal that in 2022-2026, positions within these universities were allegedly used to reward political allies. Among those appointed were a currently imprisoned governor, two former mayors, the wife of a successor, and the son of a former governor. The appointments raise serious questions about the integrity of the selection process and the independence of these educational institutions. This practice suggests the UTLs are being exploited as a means of consolidating political power and dispensing patronage. The case, investigated by La Silla Vacía, highlights potential corruption and the erosion of meritocratic principles within regional governance. This scandal underscores the urgent need for greater transparency and accountability in public university appointments across Colombia.
