A new study reveals China’s influence over African ports extends beyond physical infrastructure to encompass critical software, automation, and AI systems. Chinese firms operate, finance, or hold stakes in roughly one-third of African ports, and now control the technology powering them. This control isn’t limited to the docks themselves; Beijing also funds and manages the connecting transportation networks like roads, rail, and warehousing. This integration closely links African trade to China’s own trading systems, raising concerns about data security and strategic leverage. The study highlights a growing dependency whereby Africa’s maritime infrastructure is increasingly reliant on Chinese-controlled technology. This expanding digital influence offers Beijing significant control over a crucial aspect of African trade and logistics.
