China has launched the world’s first commercial three-band optical fibre communication system, aiming to significantly increase data transmission capabilities. Developed in Qingdao, Shandong province, the new technology reportedly increases a single fibre’s traffic capacity by over five times that of current systems. The innovation also boosts transmission capacity per core by almost 50 percent. This development is anticipated to be crucial for supporting the growing demands of artificial intelligence networks. The project was a collaboration between multiple state-owned entities, demonstrating a national push for advancements in fibre optic technology. Officials suggest this system represents a major step towards future-proofing network infrastructure for data-intensive applications. Further deployment and testing are expected to follow this initial activation.
