China is meticulously studying drone tactics employed during the Ukraine war, surpassing other nations in the speed of its analysis – typically completing assessments within four months. However, the practical application of these lessons within the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) – through training, equipment updates or force restructuring – consistently lags, often taking over a year to materialize. This lag suggests a bureaucratic process or deliberate pace in integrating new technologies. This observation comes from a recent analysis by Lilly Min-Chen Lee and Kateryna Bondar. The study indicates China’s ability to quickly dissect battlefield techniques but highlights challenges in translating these insights into tangible military improvements. This pattern raises questions regarding China's future military capabilities in light of the evolving landscape of drone warfare in Ukraine. The analysis was published in a commentary on October 7.
