Taiwan’s defense planning has historically focused on direct military invasion from China, however, recent global conflicts are highlighting alternative threats. The wars in both Ukraine and Iran have demonstrated the effectiveness of blockades as a tool of pressure and control. Analysts suggest China may be considering a strategy similar to Iran’s past attempts to disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, but applied around Taiwan. This would involve disrupting vital shipping lanes to economically and strategically isolate the island. Such a blockade wouldn’t necessarily involve direct military conflict, offering China a coercive option short of full-scale invasion. This potential shift in strategy necessitates a re-evaluation of Taiwan's defensive capabilities and international support to ensure continued access to essential resources.
