Cameroon’s Constitutional Council has ruled inadmissible a petition filed by the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC) challenging the postponement of municipal elections and the extension of current councilors’ mandates. The MRC, led by Maurice Kamto, argued that a presidential decree extending the mandates until February 2027 was unconstitutional. The Council determined it lacks jurisdiction over decrees, asserting its authority lies in reviewing the constitutionality of laws, not presidential orders. The MRC had invoked Article 46 of the Constitution, seeking the Council’s role as a “regulator of institutions” in response to the May 4th decree. The ruling effectively upholds the election delay and the extended mandates, a decision widely anticipated. Kamto had previously declared the municipal councils vacant due to the alleged illegality of the extension. This decision reinforces President Paul Biya’s administration’s control over the electoral timeline.
