A Cameroonian women and children’s rights organization, LEFE, is sounding the alarm over a dramatic increase in gender-based violence, including a recent surge of eight femicides in just eight days, and over 60 for the year 2026. The organization reports 1,599 cases of gender-based violence, including 166 rapes, between January and April 2026, calling the situation a national crisis. LEFE is reasserting its commitment to protecting women and is proposing preventative and reactive solutions. The organization has identified warning signs of imminent violence, such as death threats, control tactics, and escalating abuse, urging victims to seek shelter and document evidence. LEFE advocates for the rapid adoption of legislation specifically addressing femicide and violence against women and children, including measures for immediate victim protection like 24-hour separation orders. Beyond individual actions, LEFE emphasizes the need for a collective response to combat this growing crisis.
