Cameroonian politologist Stéphane Menounga has strongly criticized the potential transfer of presidential power to a vice-president, calling it a "political scam." Menounga argues that, as the president’s mandate originates from the people, it cannot be simply transferred to another individual. The ongoing debate surrounding the vice-presidency in Cameroon centers on the nomination process and the ability of the appointed individual to complete the president's term in case of permanent incapacitation. He contends the president is a custodian, not an owner, of the mandate received from the populace. The proposed constitutional revision of April 2026, which would reinstate the vice-presidency without a popular vote, represents a violation of Cameroon's representative system. Menounga believes the vice-presidency isn’t intended to address citizens’ concerns, but to ensure the continued power of an elite group within Cameroon.
