Cameroon is grappling with a significant increase in suicide rates, according to the Association Camerounaise de Lutte et de Prévention du Suicide (ACLS). The organization has recorded over 2333 cases countrywide, with the national rate jumping from 4.9 to 12.2 per 100,000 inhabitants between 2012 and 2016. Men are disproportionately affected, experiencing a rate of 17.1 compared to 7.4 among women. Despite this worrying trend, Cameroon currently ranks 15th in Africa for suicide rates, lagging behind countries like Lesotho, Eswatini, and South Africa. Africa remains the most affected region globally, with 11 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. While social pressures, family taboos, and school-related stress are identified as contributing factors, Cameroon lacks a free, publicly accessible helpline – unlike Gabon – to provide support for those at risk.
