Burundi has agreed to accept migrants deported from the United States under former President Donald Trump’s strict immigration policies, joining other African nations in similar agreements. The decision, announced Tuesday, will see Burundi receive migrants from countries other than their country of origin who were previously in the US. However, authorities in Bujumbura clarified that Burundi will only accept individuals with no criminal or terrorism affiliations. Presidential spokesperson Nancy Ninette Mutoni confirmed these stipulations on behalf of President Évariste Ndayishimiye. The announcement lacked specific details regarding the number of migrants, the timeframe for deportations, or any accompanying financial arrangements. This move reflects a continuation of Trump’s efforts to expand deportation options beyond migrants’ home countries. Further details are expected to be released at a later date.
