Authorities in Beijing are battling an infestation of the North American fall webworm, an invasive species causing widespread defoliation. Over a billion parasitic wasps are being released across the Chinese capital and surrounding areas as part of the control effort. Simultaneously, local officials are promoting caterpillar-catching competitions, encouraging public participation in reducing the caterpillar population. These caterpillars, the larval stage of the Hyphantria cunea moth, have created extensive greyish-white webs on trees throughout Beijing this summer. Although the insects pose no threat to human health, their feeding habits are damaging the city’s foliage. The strategy combines biological pest control with community involvement to mitigate the spread of this invasive species.
