A project by the association El Burrito Feliz has revealed an unexpected natural defense against the Asian hornet in Doñana National Park, Spain. The study demonstrates that bee-eaters and frogs are actively preying on the invasive hornet, helping to limit its expansion. Researchers observed bee-eaters consuming the hornets mid-flight, effectively reducing their numbers. Similarly, frogs are shown to be consuming the hornets at ground level. This natural predation offers a potentially sustainable method for controlling the spread of the invasive species, which poses a threat to local ecosystems and beekeeping. The findings highlight the importance of biodiversity in bolstering natural resilience against invasive species. The project suggests that supporting existing predator populations can be a valuable strategy in managing the Asian hornet issue.
