Australian scientists have developed a novel, non-toxic method to significantly reduce wheat seed loss caused by mice. The technique involves spraying diluted wheat germ oil across farm plots in areas like New South Wales, effectively masking the scent that mice use to find buried seeds. Field trials conducted in 2021 demonstrated a 63 percent reduction in seed loss during and after sowing. Even more impressive results showed up to a 74 percent decrease in losses when the oil was applied prior to planting. This innovative approach offers farmers a sustainable alternative to traditional pest control methods. Researchers believe the oil disrupts the mice's ability to locate the seeds, minimizing damage to crops. The finding promises improved yields for wheat farmers across Australia.
