Australian authorities have arrested a 27-year-old dual national accused of attempting to pass information about the Ukrainian military to Russia. The man, who traveled to Russia in October 2024 for military training, later joined the Ukrainian army in 2025 with the intention of gathering intelligence on Ukrainian forces. He believed he was communicating with Russian agents, though the actual recipient of the information remains unclear – potentially even Ukrainian or Australian intelligence. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. This arrest follows the 2024 detention of a Russian-Australian couple also accused of spying for Russia, whose case is still pending. Australian intelligence officials previously expelled a “swarm” of spies, widely believed to be from Russia, in 2022, and recently warned of Russian cyberattacks targeting Australian infrastructure.
