Researchers have discovered a rare deep-sea fish, nicknamed the “armored seadevil,” living at depths of 400 meters. This unusual fish, belonging to the Peristediinae subfamily, exhibits the unique ability to move forward, backward, and sideways. Using advanced underwater technology, scientists from Sun Yat-sen University in China observed its distinctive locomotion. Remarkably, the fish appears to “taste” with its fins and is completely blind, relying on other senses for navigation. Further research reveals that this creature shares genes with human taste receptors, suggesting a surprising evolutionary connection. The discovery highlights the biodiversity still hidden in the deep ocean and offers new avenues for understanding sensory evolution.
