The Argentine government has initiated a new protocol for seed control, aiming to facilitate the patentability of biotechnological developments. This move seeks to modernize seed regulations and encourage innovation within the sector. Simultaneously, the government has established a negotiation table with rural entities and seed companies to address ongoing concerns. A key objective is to advance the development of a new Seed Law, updating existing legislation. Furthermore, Argentina is pursuing adherence to UPOV 91, an international convention for the protection of new varieties of plants. Despite governmental progress, disagreements persist among private sector stakeholders regarding intellectual property rights related to seeds. These differences represent a challenge to fully implementing the new protocol and achieving broader consensus.
