Archaeologists have discovered remnants of a mother-of-pearl button workshop in Brno, a surprising find given the industry’s historical location further afield. Historically, “čamrdáři” – button makers – operated workshops primarily between Třebíčsko in Moravia and Žirovnice in Bohemia, supplying buttons to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This newly discovered workshop was likely a smaller operation focused on supplying buttons, known as “čamrdy” in Old Czech, to local textile factories. The discovery provides insight into the distribution and scale of this once-significant industry. This localized production suggests a more complex network of workshops than previously thought. The find includes evidence directly linked to the processing of mother-of-pearl for button production. Further research is planned to fully understand the extent and impact of this Brno workshop.
