From the 1970s to the 2000s, Africa witnessed several regimes characterized by extreme brutality. Among the most notorious leaders were Idi Amin Dada and Mengistu Hailé Mariam. Other figures who left a legacy of violence include Omar el-Béchir and Hissène Habré. Charles Taylor also ranks among the most bloodstained rulers of the continent. These regimes were marked by systemic assassinations and mass executions. Torture was frequently used as a tool of state control. Together, these five leaders represent some of the darkest periods in African history.
