A preliminary vote at the United Nations Security Council on October 16th underscored the significant influence of the veto power in selecting the next Secretary-General. None of the seven candidates secured support from all five permanent members, with each receiving at least two negative signals. The United States was the only permanent member to publicly detail its requirements for the future leader, leaving the door open for further candidates. This process, concerning the choice of the UN’s leader starting January 1, 2027, demonstrates how the veto power can impact even non-conflict related decisions. While Costa Rican Rebeca Grynspan remains a frontrunner, even she faced opposition, as did former Senegalese President Macky Sall, despite some support. Currently, no candidate enjoys a veto-free path to recommendation by the Security Council, and the U.S. ambassador indicated a desire for a partner for Donald Trump in the role.
