Ahead of upcoming municipal elections in Slovakia, extensive road asphalting is underway across the country. However, a new report highlights a concerning trend: the condition of regional bridges is rapidly deteriorating. The Supreme Audit Office of Slovakia (NKÚ) reports that 40 percent of bridges on second and third-class roads are currently in unsatisfactory condition, a significant increase from the 17 percent recorded in 2017. This worsening infrastructure poses potential problems for Slovak regions. The report warns that some bridges may require closure, disrupting transport and potentially impacting local economies. The focus on road repairs during the election period seems to overshadow the critical need for bridge maintenance and upgrades. This disparity raises questions about long-term infrastructure planning versus short-term political gains.
