The Polish parliament voted on proposals to ease abortion laws this week, following campaign promises by Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The first proposal, put forward by Tusk’s party, seeks partial decriminalization of abortion and assistance with the procedure. A second proposal, from more conservative parties, aims to overturn a 2020 high court ruling that banned abortion even in cases of severe fetal malformation. Currently, abortion in Poland is only permitted in cases of rape, incest, or when the mother’s life or health is at risk. Despite the parliamentary votes, the conservative President Karol Nawrocki is widely expected to veto both proposals, halting their progress. He has yet to publicly comment on the matter, leaving the future of abortion access in Poland uncertain.
