Despite often tumultuous relations, Pakistan emerged as an incidental beneficiary of former US President Donald Trump’s policies, according to analysts. The abrupt US withdrawal from Afghanistan created space for Pakistan to recalibrate its foreign policy and engage with various regional actors. Trump’s focus on trade negotiations with China inadvertently increased Pakistan’s strategic importance as a potential alternative for investment and supply chains. While the suspension of security assistance under Trump caused short-term difficulties, it also pushed Pakistan to seek alternative sources of defence equipment and strengthen its indigenous capabilities. The changing dynamic also allowed Pakistan to play a more facilitative role in the Afghan peace process, though with limited long-term success. Ultimately, the unpredictable nature of Trump’s foreign policy created both challenges and opportunities for Pakistan, resulting in unforeseen benefits alongside setbacks.
