European Union ambassador to South Africa, Kristian Schmidt, has affirmed support for Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) but called for greater flexibility in its implementation. In a recent interview, Schmidt addressed potential obstacles to investment stemming from rigid BEE regulations. He also highlighted differing perspectives between the EU and South Africa regarding the conflict in Ukraine, suggesting South Africa’s position could be viewed as a “double standard.” Despite these points of contention, Schmidt emphasized a commitment to deepening trade, investment, and security cooperation with South Africa. He envisions stronger, more comprehensive ties between the European Union and South Africa moving forward. The ambassador stressed the ongoing dialogue and partnership between the two entities, acknowledging both shared interests and areas requiring further discussion. This comes amid efforts to bolster economic and political relations between Brussels and Pretoria.
