Zetech University has received a grant from Lloyd’s Register Foundation to initiate a project focused on preserving the historical contributions of women to maritime safety in Kenya. The year-long program will specifically concentrate on Mombasa and Kilifi counties, commencing in 2026 and concluding in April 2027. A core component of the initiative involves collecting oral histories to document the often-unrecognized roles women have played in ensuring coastal maritime safety. The project aims to highlight and safeguard this vital, yet largely undocumented, aspect of Kenyan heritage. Researchers will gather firsthand accounts, offering a unique perspective on maritime practices and safety measures. This undertaking seeks to provide a more comprehensive understanding of Kenya’s maritime past and acknowledge the crucial role of women within it. The collected data will contribute to a valuable historical record for future generations.
