Divine, a 19-year-old, became a blood donor after witnessing the pain her friend Evangeline experienced due to sickle cell disease. Evangeline frequently requires hospitalization as a result of the condition. Divine was particularly moved after witnessing a severe crisis her friend endured, prompting her to register with Sanquin, a blood bank organization. She hopes her actions will inspire others to donate blood, emphasizing the critical need for increased donor participation, particularly within the Black community. Individuals with sickle cell disease often require frequent blood transfusions, and finding compatible donors can be challenging due to genetic factors. Divine’s donation directly supports her friend and aims to raise awareness about the importance of diverse blood donation to improve outcomes for those with sickle cell disease. She believes increased donor diversity is vital for effective treatment.
