Nicolai Østeby, leader of Unge Høyre (Young Conservatives), has responded to incoming Arbeiderpartiets Ungdomsfylking (AUF, Labour Youth) leader Fawzi Warsame’s statement that Norway should not profit from nuclear weapons production. Østeby criticized Warsame, suggesting he adopt a more pragmatic approach, emphasizing the importance of the arms industry for both Norwegian and NATO security. He argues that profiting from security and deterrence is not unethical. Østeby points out that Norway already spends billions of kroner purchasing weapon systems from companies currently excluded from the Government Pension Fund Global (oljefondet). He questions the ethics of procuring weapons from companies while simultaneously excluding Norwegian ownership and influence over those same companies. The debate stems from recommendations by a government-appointed committee to allow the oljefondet to invest in companies involved in nuclear weapons production.
