Divers have positively identified the SS Samuel J. Tilden, a key shipwreck from a little-known 1942 attack on Dutch Harbor, Alaska, often called “Little Pearl Harbor.” The vessel was sunk during a Japanese aerial assault, one of only two attacks on American soil during World War II. The identification, confirmed recently, closes a decades-long mystery surrounding the wreck’s identity. The Tilden was a cargo ship delivering supplies when it was bombed and subsequently beached, eventually sinking. Researchers used historical records, sonar imaging, and physical artifacts to confirm the ship’s identity. The discovery provides valuable insight into the Aleutian Islands Campaign and the broader Pacific Theater of WWII. The wreck site is now considered a historically significant underwater archaeological resource.
