Renowned 20th-century French historian Marc Bloch, a key figure in the development of the ‘Annales School’ of history alongside Lucien Febvre, will be enshrined in the Panthéon in a ceremony on June 23rd. This honor is reserved for France’s most distinguished citizens. Bloch served as a soldier in both World Wars, demonstrating a commitment to his country beyond academia. He was tragically captured and executed by the Gestapo in 1944 for his participation in the French Resistance during World War II. The ceremony recognizes not only his significant contributions to historical scholarship but also his bravery and sacrifice during the Nazi occupation. Bloch’s inclusion in the Panthéon is a rare tribute acknowledging his dual legacy as an intellectual and a wartime hero. This event underscores France’s remembrance of those who fought for its liberation.
