Hungarian airline Wizz Air is threatening to close its Belgrade base by November due to new regulations issued by the Directorate of Civil Aviation. The new rules, outlined in a recently adopted regulation, are expected to drastically increase operational costs for the airline. Wizz Air officials warn the changes will make maintaining a base in Belgrade economically unsustainable. The airline alleges the regulations disproportionately impact low-cost carriers like themselves. Without amendments to the rule, Wizz Air will be forced to cease operations at the Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport. This potential closure raises concerns about reduced flight options and potential economic consequences for the region. The Directorate has not yet publicly responded to Wizz Air’s concerns.
