Ghana is spearheading a regional initiative among ECOWAS nations to collaboratively develop and process their mineral resources. The campaign, summarized as “mine together, process together,” aims to move beyond exporting raw materials and instead foster industrialization within West Africa. This effort is directly linked to bolstering the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by increasing intra-African trade. The initiative seeks to add value to the region’s abundant mineral wealth, creating larger industries and economic opportunities. By processing minerals domestically, ECOWAS hopes to reduce reliance on external markets and capture a greater share of the value chain. The move represents a concerted effort to leverage natural resources for broader economic development across the sub-region and strengthen Africa’s position in global trade. Ghana is positioning itself as a key driver of this pan-African economic strategy.
