A new study published in *Communications Sustainability* reveals the world’s wealthiest 10% are responsible for a disproportionately large share of global environmental damage. Researchers found this group caused between $1.7 trillion and $5.7 trillion in environmental harm in 2017 alone. The study, led by Inge Schrijver, quantifies the financial burden of environmental impacts linked to the consumption habits of the richest individuals. These costs include pollution, resource depletion, and climate change contributions. The research highlights a significant disparity in environmental impact between the wealthiest and the rest of the global population. The findings underscore the need for policy changes addressing the consumption patterns of high-income earners to mitigate environmental degradation.
