Vietnam has achieved a significant milestone in its international legal integration with the appointment of a judge to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS). Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung hailed this as a new development for the country’s participation in international legal frameworks. This marks the first time Vietnam has held a judicial position at the ITLOS, which settles disputes concerning ocean use, including maritime boundaries, fishing rights, and environmental protection. The appointment underscores Vietnam’s growing influence and commitment to international law, particularly concerning the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). It also reflects the country’s increasing engagement in addressing complex maritime challenges globally. This development is expected to enhance Vietnam’s ability to contribute to the peaceful resolution of maritime disputes and promote a rules-based international order.
