A remarkable rescue operation is underway in Venezuela, where 43-year-old Hernan Gil has survived for a week trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed building following the June 24th earthquakes. Rescue teams from seven nations – Venezuela, Chile, the United States, Portugal, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Mexico – have been working tirelessly to reach Gil, a security guard who was in his booth when the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude quakes struck. As of late Wednesday, rescuers were just one meter from Gil’s location, and a video released by the Chilean fire service showed him alive, though injured. His wife expressed amazement at the international collaboration focused on saving her husband. The rescue effort continues amidst fading hopes of finding other survivors following the devastating earthquakes which claimed almost 2,300 lives. Precarious conditions are adding to the complexity, with nearby structures at risk of collapse, requiring additional shoring and stabilization work.
