A recent earthquake in Venezuela is expected to exacerbate the already dire humanitarian situation affecting millions, according to Jan Egeland, Secretary-General of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC). Prior to the earthquakes, over a quarter of Venezuela’s population was already in need of emergency assistance. Egeland stated the disaster will worsen the suffering of those already in desperate need. The NRC is currently assessing the most urgent needs of those impacted and will seek funding from international donors and the private sector. Efforts will focus on scaling up support for the hardest-hit communities. The earthquakes pose a significant challenge to aid organizations operating in the country.
