The death toll from the recent devastating earthquakes in Venezuela has risen to 2,954, with over 16,592 injured and an estimated 50,000 people missing. The earthquakes struck coastal La Guaira and the capital Caracas on June 24th, significantly hindering rescue efforts as the crucial 72-hour window for finding survivors has passed. While a security guard was miraculously rescued from a collapsed shopping center after being protected by a remarkably resilient booth, hopes of finding more survivors are dwindling. More than 16,000 people are now homeless and residing in temporary shelters facing dire conditions, including a lack of clean water and adequate sanitation, raising fears of further fatalities due to infection. The government claims to have assisted 84,000 families with food and aid, but citizens are criticizing the slow and insufficient relief response. Despite these claims, many Venezuelans report having to search for loved ones themselves in the immediate aftermath of the disaster.
