The city of Utrecht is set to discuss the timing of its annual marathon with organizers following heat-related illnesses experienced by participants during this year’s race, including the death of a 22-year-old man days after the event. Concerns have been raised regarding holding the marathon in late May, when warmer temperatures and the risk of heatstroke are higher. Currently, the municipality only assesses calendar availability when reviewing permit applications, leaving the date selection to the organizers. While the organizers’ heat protocol is assessed, the city now intends to proactively discuss the suitability of the current timeframe. However, the marathon’s organizing company, Golazo, is resistant to changing the date, citing a desire to maintain a year-round running calendar. Discussions will also address the race route, though organizers are currently unwilling to alter it, particularly with the 2029 European Running Championships in mind.
