A new survey reveals that a surprising quarter of young Africans believe potential cuts to USAID funding could be beneficial. These young people argue that reducing reliance on foreign aid will compel African leaders to proactively address and resolve their own internal challenges. Optimism is particularly high in Ghana (41%), Nigeria (40%), and Liberia (37%) among those aged 18-24. The African Youth Survey, encompassing nearly 5,000 interviews across 16 African nations, highlights a growing sentiment of self-determination. However, concerns regarding increasing foreign influence remain prevalent alongside this optimism. Approximately 11% of young Africans surveyed expressed uncertainty about the potential effects of reduced US aid. The findings suggest a complex attitude towards foreign assistance among Africa’s youth.
