The United States plans to establish a significant military equipment stockpile in southeastern Australia, near Melbourne, this year. This follows a similar move to preposition equipment in the Philippines, close to the South China Sea. These stockpiles, a strategy dating back to the Cold War, are intended to counter China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region. Washington initiated this renewed pre-positioning of military assets to respond to perceived Chinese ambitions. The Australian stockpile is expected to be even larger than the one planned for the Philippines. This development signals an increased US military presence and strategic focus on the Indo-Pacific. The move aims to enhance response capabilities in the region and deter potential aggression.
