US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited the UAE to discuss the recently agreed-upon memorandum of understanding with Iran and to reaffirm security commitments to the Emirates. The visit comes as Gulf allies express concerns that the deal does not adequately address Iran’s ballistic missile program and regional aggression, including past missile attacks. Rubio emphasized that no nation can impose fees for passage through the Strait of Hormuz, responding to recent discussions between Oman and Iran regarding potential charges for ships. Discussions with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed focused on regional stability, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, and the US commitment to UAE security. Rubio is continuing his Gulf tour, with stops planned in Kuwait and Bahrain, including attendance at a Gulf Cooperation Council meeting. The US aims to reassure allies impacted by Iranian actions and maintain a strong security presence in the region.
