The US-led coalition is formally ending its mission in Iraq after more than ten years of operations. Initially deployed in 2014, the coalition intervened in Iraq and Syria to combat the Islamic State (IS) group following its seizure of territory and commission of widespread atrocities. IS was militarily defeated in Iraq in 2017 and in Syria in 2019, however, coalition forces remained to counter remaining elements of the organization. Despite successfully aiding in the country’s preservation from jihadist control, the coalition’s presence generated ongoing tensions within Iraq. The conclusion of the mission marks a shift in the security landscape for Iraq as it takes greater responsibility for its own defense. The move signifies a changing dynamic following years of international military involvement.
