An American construction company, Caddell, has agreed to a settlement after being accused of exploiting hundreds of foreign workers in Milan, Italy during the building of the new U.S. consulate. Caddell allegedly paid laborers from India, Nigeria, Kenya, and Bangladesh approximately 40 Czech crowns (roughly $1.60 USD) per hour, failing to pay overtime despite workers clocking up to ten hours daily for six days a week. Furthermore, workers were charged for their housing. The settlement will provide each of the nearly 500 workers an average of one million Czech crowns (roughly $40,000 USD). Italian authorities state this case represents the largest instance of cheap labor exploitation in Europe. Construction on the consulate in Milan is expected to conclude in 2028.
