A US-Iran deal brokered by Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been signed electronically, aiming to de-escalate tensions in the region. The agreement, dubbed the ‘Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding,’ will see Iran immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping. In return, the United States will immediately lift its naval blockade against Iran. Sharif praised both US President Trump and Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and President Pezeshkian for their commitment to a diplomatic resolution. He also highlighted the crucial roles played by Pakistani Field Marshal Asim Munir and negotiating teams from both countries, as well as supporting efforts from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Egypt. The agreement is expected to have an immediate effect, preventing potential wider conflict and promoting regional stability.
