The University of the Republic in Uruguay has introduced a new course focused on spatial architecture and the design of human habitats for extraterrestrial environments. Taught by Gastón Ibarburu and Lucía Nicotera, the course marks a first for the university’s Faculty of Architecture (FADU). It aims to equip students with the skills necessary to conceptualize and create living spaces beyond Earth. Registration for the innovative course is now open. This initiative reflects a growing interest in space exploration and the need for specialized design expertise to support potential off-world settlements. The course will likely cover topics such as life support systems, radiation shielding, and the psychological considerations of long-duration space habitation. It represents a significant step for Uruguayan architectural education, positioning the university at the forefront of emerging fields.
